HRA Exemption Calculator — how it works
If you receive House Rent Allowance and pay rent, part of that HRA can be exempt from tax under the old regime. This calculator works out exactly how much.
The three-way test
HRA exemption is the lowest of three amounts: (1) HRA actually received, (2) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, and (3) 50% of basic salary in a metro city or 40% in a non-metro. Whichever of these three is smallest is what you get to exempt.
Old regime only
HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime. If you've opted for the new regime, this exemption doesn't apply — worth checking with the Income Tax Calculator above which regime actually works out better for you overall.
Documentation needed
Keep rent receipts, and if annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, your landlord's PAN is mandatory for claiming the exemption. Our Rent Receipt Generator below can help with the receipts.
