TDS Calculator — how it works

Tax Deducted at Source applies to many common payments — contractor fees, professional fees, rent, commission and more. This calculator applies the correct rate for common sections so you deduct the right amount.

Choosing the right section

Each type of payment falls under a specific TDS section with its own rate — for example, 194J for professional fees (10%) versus 194C for contractor payments (1-2%). Picking the wrong section is one of the most common compliance mistakes we see.

No PAN, higher TDS

If the payee hasn't furnished their PAN, section 206AA requires TDS at 20% or the normal applicable rate, whichever is higher — a meaningful jump from standard rates.

Threshold limits

Most sections only require TDS once payments in a year cross a specified threshold (for example, ₹30,000 for professional fees under 194J). This calculator estimates the rate — always confirm the current threshold applies to your situation.

The formula

TDS = Payment amount × applicable rate (or 20%, if PAN not furnished — whichever is higher)

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I deduct TDS at the wrong rate?
You may face interest and penalties for short deduction, and the payee may face difficulty claiming credit. Double-check the correct section before deducting.
Do I need a TAN to deduct TDS?
Yes — anyone required to deduct TDS must obtain a Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) and use it when depositing the tax and filing TDS returns.
