PPF Calculator — how it works

The Public Provident Fund is a government-backed, long-term savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in, tax-free interest, and a deduction under section 80C. This calculator projects your maturity corpus.

EEE tax status

PPF enjoys "Exempt-Exempt-Exempt" status: your contribution is deductible under 80C (up to ₹1.5L/year), the interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free too — one of the few instruments with this treatment.

Rate changes quarterly

The government revises the PPF interest rate every quarter. This calculator uses the rate you enter, so update it to the current notified rate for an accurate projection over long periods.

After 15 years

You can withdraw the full corpus, or extend the account in blocks of 5 years, with or without making further contributions, continuing to earn tax-free interest.

The formula

Balance = [(Balance previous year + yearly contribution) × (1 + rate)], repeated for each year

Frequently asked questions

Can I open more than one PPF account?
No — an individual can hold only one PPF account (except a minor's account operated by a guardian), with a combined annual contribution limit of Rs 1.5 lakh across both.
What happens if I miss a year's contribution?
The account becomes inactive; you can reactivate it by paying a small penalty plus the minimum yearly contribution for each missed year.
