NPS Calculator — how it works

The National Pension System is a market-linked retirement scheme. This calculator projects your corpus at age 60, how much you can withdraw as a lump sum, and an indicative monthly pension from the annuity portion.

The 40% annuity rule

At retirement, at least 40% of your NPS corpus must be used to purchase an annuity, which pays you a monthly pension for life. The remaining 60% (or less, if you choose to annuitize more) can be withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum.

Additional tax benefit

NPS offers an extra ₹50,000 deduction under section 80CCD(1B), over and above the ₹1.5L limit under 80C — one of the few ways to get additional tax deduction beyond the standard 80C cap.

Pension amount varies

The actual monthly pension depends on the annuity plan and provider you choose at retirement, and prevailing annuity rates at that time — this calculator gives an indicative figure only.

The formula

Corpus (age 60) = SIP future-value formula on monthly contributions; Pension = (Corpus × annuity %) × annuity rate ÷ 12

Frequently asked questions

Can I withdraw NPS before 60?
Partial withdrawal is allowed after 3 years for specific purposes (education, medical treatment, home purchase), capped at 25% of your own contributions.
Is the NPS maturity amount taxable?
The 60% lump-sum withdrawal is tax-free; the 40% used to buy an annuity is not taxed at withdrawal, but the pension you later receive from it is taxed as income.
